In response to the ongoing post-election violence in Tanzania, the Secretary General, Hon. Shirley Botchwey said:

I am deeply concerned at the situation in Tanzania following disturbing reports of violence, injuries and deaths during demonstrations in urban areas of Tanzania.

I appeal to Tanzanian authorities to ensure conditions for peaceful and orderly demonstration, while I encourage all to exercise maximum restraint and respect for law and order.

Authorities need to initiate a thorough and impartial investigation into allegations of excessive use of force by security forces.

Political parties and other stakeholders should also immediately engage in dialogue to address the causes for the post election unrest and to strengthen democracy in the country.
