The 2nd Commonwealth Blue Charter Ministerial Steering Committee took place on the sidelines of the 3rd UN Ocean Conference held in Nice, France, this week, reinforcing their collective commitment to protecting the ocean and accelerating action under the Commonwealth Blue Charter Action Groups.

The Commonwealth is playing a vital role in advancing the ratification and implementation of the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement), adopted under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 2023, and now coming into focus as countries gather this week in Nice, France, for the UN Ocean Conference.

Delegates at the recent 4th Biennial Commonwealth Sustainable Energy Transition (CSET) Forum called for increased South-South cooperation to drive just and sustainable energy transitions across the Commonwealth.

Commonwealth High Commissioners and other member country representatives recently met at Marlborough House for a briefing on the implementation of the Apia Commonwealth Ocean Declaration, adopted in Samoa at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. More than 80 experts and partners came together at the ������’s headquarters in London this week to tackle the intersection of food security and climate finance, amid global development spending cuts.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, bade farewell to representatives from Caribbean member states, who she describes as “a powerhouse within the Commonwealth”.

This month, a group of experts, including representatives from financial and insurance companies and Commonwealth High Commissioners, met to discuss the opportunities to make Small Island Developing States (SIDS) more robust in the face of the growing climate emergency.

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is currently holding the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 2 to 13 December.

With over 12 million tonnes of plastic entering the ocean annually, the cost of inaction is untenable. Commonwealth stakeholders are now better equipped to advocate for a bold and inclusive pathway that reflects the priorities of its members and builds momentum towards sustainable, circular economies.

One message that has resonated across the conference halls at COP29 is the urgent call for increased access to critical climate finance. 

The challenge before the Commonwealth of Nations is monumental. Climate change is no longer a distant threat — it is here, testing resilience, economies, and the future of humanity itself. Despite some important progress, the world is not yet on track to keep global temperatures below 2°C, let alone within the critical 1.5°C threshold. Achieving this will require unprecedented cooperation, courage, and commitment. The race to triple renewable capacity is hotting up.
